Looking for library? Itll be at old Golds Gym in PTCBy JOHN MUNFORD
When Peachtree Citys library shuts down for its expansion construction, likely in September, patrons will have to hit the gym to pick up their books, browse the periodicals and check their e-mail. The Golds Gym on Ga. Highway 74 at Commerce Drive will be the temporary location for the library under a lease approved Thursday night by the Peachtree City City Council. The building is just off Aberdeen Parkway. Officials estimated the space will only be needed for a year; the timing worked well since the gym was being closed due to a recent merger involving Golds Gym. Randy Gaddo, the citys director of leisure services, said the 15,000 sq. ft. space is ideal for the librarys needs because it is so open. Much of the space on the market was suited for office uses, which didnt fit what was needed for the library. The cost of fixing up the gym for the library will also be minimal, Gaddo said. The city will use a wireless networking system for the computers instead of the usual wires and cables, he added. The lease for the Golds Gym location will be funded through proceeds from the bond issue for the project, Gaddo said. The lease will cost $12,549 a month plus utilities, which average $1,700 a month. The round-trip move will cost $56,000, but even adding the cost of the lease, it will still come in well under the original budget. The lease will be for 12 months, which should be plenty of time to finish the construction project, Gaddo said. If more time is necessary through an extension, the city will notify the property owner after the 10-month mark of the lease. |
