ARC sets public meetings on water quality

The Atlanta Regional Commission will host four public meetings, beginning June 21 in Fayetteville, to obtain comments from the public on draft plans for addressing pollution from bacteria and sediment in streams that fail to meet water quality standards in the Chattahoochee and Flint River Basins in metro Atlanta.

ARC has worked since March with county and city governments and local water and sewer authorities in the two river basins to develop the plans to bring sediment and bacteria levels in line with water quality standards. ARC held an earlier series of meetings to seek public input on sources of pollution and strategies for reducing it.

Meeting attendees will have a chance to examine maps showing which streams are polluted, hear a presentation about the plans and discuss additional sources of the pollution in the watersheds. Meetings are scheduled throughout the region as follows:

• Monday, June 21, 6:30 p.m., Fayetteville City Hall, 240 Glynn Street South.

• Tuesday, June 22, 7 p.m., Alpharetta City Hall Council Chambers, 2 South Main Street.

• Wednesday, June 23, 6:30 p.m., Smyrna Community Center, Community Room, 200 Village Green Circle.

• Thursday, June 24, 7:30 p.m., Atlanta Botanical Garden, Fuqua Orchid Center, 1345 Piedmont Avenue N.E., Atlanta.

Individuals who cannot attend a meeting can review the plans online and see the presentation about the initiative at www.atlantaregional.com/cleanerstreams. Also on the Web site is an interactive map of the affected streams, enabling citizens to see which streams in their neighborhood are polluted with bacteria or sediment. Copies of the plans are also available at the main branch of the public library in Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett and Henry counties.

The affected jurisdictions include Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett and Henry counties; and the cities of Alpharetta, Atlanta, Austell, Avondale Estates, Berkeley Lake, Buford, Clarkston, Chamblee, College Park, Decatur, Doraville, Douglasville, Duluth, East Point, Fairburn, Fayetteville, Forest Park, Hampton, Hapeville, Jonesboro, Lake City, Lovejoy, Marietta, Morrow, Norcross, Palmetto, Powder Springs, Rest Haven, Riverdale, Roswell, Smyrna, Sugar Hill, Suwanee, Tyrone, Union City, Villa Rica and Woolsey.
