Union City will be filled with cyclists this weekendBy LINDSAY BIANCHI
Get pumped because it's time, once again, to test your mettle. The third annual Union City Mayor's Bicycle Race sponsored by Hank Aaron BMW kicks off this weekend with a $15,000 prize purse as a good incentive to compete. The bicycle race and time trials is becoming a new tradition in Union City who have hosted the event each summer. The weekends events include the Hank Aaron Criterium, the Bicycles Unlimited Time Trial and the Maxxis Road Race. The Criterium race will be conducted behind Shannon Mall. Time trials, which start and finish on South Fulton Parkway are being held Saturday. The Maxxis Road Race being held on Sunday, June 20 will start on Union Street and run up Ga. Highway 92, travel along South Fulton Parkway and finish up back on Union Street. This race will last most of the day. Prize money is being awarded for each event. An overall prize goes to the best cyclist who participates in all three races. Results for the time trials will be posted at the host hotel, the Comfort Inn in Union City. Road race results will be posted at the race site. For those who have not pre-registered, a Friday night registration at the Shannon Mall Community Room will be conducted from 6-9 p.m. Late registration costs $10 and begins at 9:01 p.m. Saturday registration is available at the criterium race site beginning at 7:30 a.m. Sunday registration is available at the road race site inside the Union City Depot. Registration ends thirty minutes before each event. The time trial is a pre-registered event only. For more information about this event visit www.georgiavelo.com and click on the race bible.
