For the second year, Offshoot Productions' artistic
director Susan M. Steadman, Ph.D. will offer "Shakespeare
for Young Actors," designed for participants
aged 10 to 18, through the Peachtree City Recreation
Department.
Coming on the heels of the successful, just-closed
Comedy of Errors at the Villages Amphitheater,
the camp provides instruction and fun in equal
measures.
"Shakespeare for Young Actors" will
be held Monday through Friday, July 12 to 16, from
10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $88. An invited
audience will view scenes from Shakespeare on the
last day.
Camp participants will enjoy compliment and insult
contests, along with learning the manners and movement
of the Elizabethan era. They will discover how
to analyze and perform scenes from the Bard's great
comic and tragic plays by tapping into their own
experience and their imagination.
No previous experience is required. Participants
who have taken previous Shakespeare camps may attend,
as the scene work is always different and new instructional
material is added. Dr. Steadman, who has been teaching
and directing for over three decades, says she
redesigns classes, workshops and camps from year
to year.
"I need to keep it fresh, both for returning
students and myself," she explains.
Depending upon enrollment, additional instructors
from Offshoot's staff will work alongside Steadman
to keep the teacher-student ratio low.
Two additional theater camps will be offered by
Offshoot through the Peachtree City Recreation
Department. "Creating a Play," aimed
at ages 10 to 15, runs from Monday through Friday,
July 19 to 23, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The fee
is $80. "Acting For Young Children," for
ages seven to nine, will be held on Monday through
Friday, July 26 to 30, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
This camp costs $75.
