State licensing board for residential and general contractors createdGov. Sonny Perdue recently signed House Bill 1003 into law at the State Capitol. HB 1003, authored by Rep. Alan Powell (D-Hartwell) and Rep. Doug Stoner (D-Smyrna) among others, will create a standard licensing board which will define terms and powers for both residential and general contractors. Sen. Mitch Seabaugh (R-Sharpsburg), who carried the bill in the Senate, also was a part of the signing ceremony. "I believe this bill will have an important impact on the contracting industry," stated Sen. Seabaugh, who serves as the chairman of the Senate Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee. "HB 1003 is in the homeowners' and the general public's best interest by protecting them against inefficient and inadequate residential and general contractors." HB 1003 makes standard regulations across the board for contractors, including examinations and fees, and will make the industry more uniform in operation. Previously, the profession of contractor was not clearly defined by law, but now will fall under a specific description and qualifications. The industry will be regulated more closely by falling under the same criteria across the board.
