Builders award scholarshipsThe Home Builders Association of Midwest Georgia gave recognition to the 15 recipients of the associations annual scholarships at its June meeting, held recently at the Wyndham Peachtree Conference Center in Peachtree City. The 2004 scholarship recipients include Brittany Lynn Smith, East Coweta High School; Erica Owen and Hayley Ward, Fayette County High School; Sarah Riordan, Griffin High School; Katrina Irvin, McIntosh High School; Thomas Foster Glazier, Taylor McMichael and Alyssa Zeiler, Newnan High School; Tabitha Hope Guettler, Northgate High School; Jonathan Graham and Kali Woody, Sandy Creek High School; Yasmeen Shata, Spalding High School; and Adam Bashakes, Rebecca Guertin and Sara Thompson, Starrs Mill High School. Currently, $1,000 scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors from the Fayette, Spalding and Coweta County School Systems who are entering a college in the state of Georgia. Employees of businesses related to the building industry and/or students interested in field of study related to the industry receive preference for scholarships. The scholarship program, which is funded by the associations Scholarship House project, began 20 years ago, and the association has now awarded 176 scholarships totaling $238,500. Also recognized at the meeting were W. Reece Brown, Ryan Hutcheson and Russel Troesken, three area residents who are recipients of 2004 Lewis Cenker Scholarships. These scholarships, a statewide program of the Home Builders Association of Georgia, are named for Lewis Cenker, a Georgian who served as 1972 president of the National Home Builders Association. The Cenker awards go only to students who are currently enrolled in building industry related studies. Speaker for the meeting was State Rep. Lynn Westmoreland, who is a member of the Midwest Georgia association and a current candidate for a Congressional seat. Telling the group that he is proud to be a builder, Westmoreland said that people in the building industry are like a family. He advised the scholarship recipients to use their opportunity for an education to the best of your ability. He urged the students to get the best education you can. Sponsors of the association meeting were Atlanta Gas Light and North Georgia Brick/Corinthian Stone. The Home Builders Association of Midwest Georgia serves builders in Fayette, Coweta, Spalding, Meriwether, Heard, Pike, Upson, Lamar, Butts and Jasper counties.
