County preserving historic springBy JOHN THOMPSON
Coweta County will have a little bit more greenspace for its residents to enjoy. The County Commission announced last week it had completed the purchase of a nearly 19-acre tract from Carl and Joey Smith near U.S. Hwy 29 South between Newnan and Moreland. The property contains the historic Pearl Spring, a 7-acre lake, and a wetland area. The County Commission worked with the Coweta County Greenspace Committee to purchase the property. Nearly 12 acres of the property was bought with $280,000 in state greenspace money. The additional acreage was donated by the Smiths. Officials plan to use the area as a recreation area and possibly add walking trails to the historic site. The Coweta County Greenspace Committee members are Norma Haynes, chairman; Ann Beegle, vice chairman; Jay Stallings and Bill Underwood. Allyson Powell, who had been an active member of the committee since February 2002, recently resigned her position. The Greenspace Committee works in close cooperation with Coweta County Comprehensive Planner Sandra Parker.
