Coweta playwright gets her spotlight next weekBy JOHN THOMPSON
Tammy Waldrop will probably be on pins and needles until next Thursday night. Cowetas newest playwright will finally get to see her play, Keeping Dixie, performed on the stage at Southside Theater Guild in Fairburn. Shes really excited about it, said director Heather May. The story revolves around three character, Agnes, her mentally-handicapped daughter Dixie and Dixies son, David. David is very disdainful of his mothers handicap, since he is a straight A student, May said. David meets his father, who is a very succesful attorney, and is immediately drawn to him because of his success. But in the play, just as in life, things are not always as they seem. May said the theater company gets several locally submitted plays each year, but this is the first one the theater decided to produce. It was just the right one for us. We really liked the story and the characters, she said. May said Waldrop has had one other play produced for a benefit, called Buff, the Vampire Slayer, but this is the first of her plays to receive a full-scale production. The play opens Thursday at the Fairburn playhouse and runs Thursdays-Saturday for three weeks. All shows are at 8 p.m. and tickets are $10 on Thursdays and $12 for adults on Friday and Saturday. Student tickets are $10 on Fridays and Saturdays. To order tickets, call 770-969-0956 or order on the Web site at www.stgplays.com.
