Sr. Olympics coming to AtlantaGames to attract participants who like the sound of Fifty, fit and fun The Senior Olympics are coming to Atlanta. In a news conference held June 8, Mayor Shirley Franklin announced that Atlanta is about to host another Olympics, the second in eight years: the 2005 Atlanta Senior Olympics, for adults 50 and over, in the spring of 2005. The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta has been selected as the host organization. In partnership with the United States Olympic Committee and the National Senior Games Association, the Marcus Jewish Community Center is dedicated to bringing metro Atlanta and beyond a Senior Olympics for the Fifty, Fit, and Fun. After touring the impressive MJCCA facilities June 8, Mayor Franklin talked to a filled auditorium about the incredible opportunity that the Center is offering to those fifty years and older. Every day I get up and tell myself it is a good day to get fit, Mayor Franklin said, and having just passed fifty myself, participating in these Senior Olympics Games will be the perfect excuse. This unprecedented event will draw several thousand people from across metro Atlanta to compete in numerous events that may include: track & field, swimming, tennis, basketball, cycling, race walking, badminton, softball, archery, bowling, table tennis, racquetball, horseshoes, bridge, darts, mah jongg, billiards and poker. The Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta was selected as the host organization because of its successful track record in developing and implementing related programming throughout the year such as: nutrition management, aerobics and fitness, strength training for older adults, cardio, arthritis management, pilates, personal training, senior walking clubs, master swim and tennis leagues, cancer awareness and reaction, and family programming for the children and grandchildren of the participants. Jon Albert, Chief Marketing Officer says, This will be a year round celebration of being healthy, active, social, and fifty plus. This is yet another way THE J impacts the physical, mental, emotional, and social health of our great Atlanta community.
