Perdue appoints Handel to transportation task forceFulton County Commission Chair Karen Handel was named this week to Governor Sonny Perdues newly created Task Force on Local Transportation Strategies.Ê Handel is one of 19 leaders statewide appointed to the group, which will assess transportation funding strategies for Georgia counties and municipalities. I am honored that the Governor selected me for this committee, said Handel. I share Governor Perdues commitment to identifying viable, long-term congestion relief solutions. Having Fulton County represented on this task force sends a strong message about the Governors support for our County and the significant role we have in regional and state-wide solutions. The task force is charged with making recommendations on how to address local transportation infrastructure issues and identifying funding options. According to the Governors Office, 83% of roads traveled are not state or federally funded. These off-system roads must be fully operational to best feed the backbone of the transportation infrastructure, the highway and state road system. I am a firm believer in sharing best practices and seeking creative ways to address our problems, said Handel. All local jurisdictions struggle with funding infrastructure, and working together in a focused effort, we can identify some meaningful approaches that will help address this. The committee is required by the Governors Executive Order to present its first report by November 1, 2004.
