City council proposes pay raiseBy LINDSAY BIANCHI
The Mayor and City Council of Union City held a public hearing at their June 15 monthly meeting to propose a raise in pay. We are getting paid next to nothing, City Councilman Shirley Jackson said. The current salaries of $200 per month for council members and $400 per month for the Mayor are significantly lower than surrounding communities. The raise would make their pay more comparable to what other cities such as Fairburn are now paying. The Council members monthly wages would be raised to $700 per month and the mayors $900 per month. If passed, the increases would not go into effect until after next years elections. No one spoke out against the proposed raises, which will see at least one more public hearing before being voted on. In addition, Chevron Food Mart at 4520 Jonesboro Road was granted a license to sell packaged liquor. Approval was also given to BFI, the citys trash service for an extension of two years on their contract. The council reserved the option to extend the service by BFI one last time before proposals from competing companies must be heard. Request for a map amendment to rezone property along Highpoint Road from residential to neighborhood commercial was shot down in another public hearing. The owner of the property wanted to open a convenient store next to his house.
