Teens volunteering at FCH during summer

While some students are spending their summer perfecting their video game skills or hitting the pool, others are getting hands-on experience in the healthcare field. More than 80 local teens are committing their summer vacation time to the Youth Volunteer Program at Fayette Community Hospital.

"The youth that apply for our program are without exception a remarkable group," said John Woody, president of Fayette Community Hospital Auxiliary. "When you review their applications you cannot help but be impressed by the array of community, church and school leadership roles each has contributed. They certainly represent the very best of today's youth."

This year more than 100 students applied for volunteer positions at the Hospital, this is the second year that the Hospital has seen such excitement about this program. The teens are divided among 11 service areas at Fayette Community Hospital allowing them to explore the various aspects of healthcare. The eight-week program includes CPR training, an opportunity to attend a state conference and day-to-day shadowing experiences with FCH employees.

Students who wish to participate must be 14 years of age, submit an essay on why they want to volunteer, provide a letter of reference and be able to commit a minimum of 25 hours over the summer. Students from Fayette, Clayton and Fulton counties are among the volunteers. If you would like more information regarding volunteer opportunities, call 770-719-7098.

Fayette Community Hospital, a not-for-profit subsidiary of Piedmont Medical Center, is on Ga. Highway 54 in Fayetteville. Services of the 100-bed community hospital include: 24-hour emergency department, medical/surgical, critical care, diagnostics, including laboratory, radiology and mammography, respiratory, physical therapy and rehabilitation, outpatient surgery and comprehensive outpatient services and a minor emergency care center.
