Legion plans renovationBy CAROLYN CARY The board of directors for American Legion Post 105 in Fayetteville has borrowed $35,000 to renovate its 69-year-old building. Located one block south of the old courthouse, it was built during the Depression by workers from the Works Progress Administration, instituted by President Franklin Roosevelt as a means of giving employment to people without jobs at that time. The current projects include moving the kitchen and the ladies restroom from one end of the building to the other, next to the mens restroom, and putting all of the plumbing in one place. Other priorities include replacing all of the wiring and plumbing, windows and three doors, and installing a fire suppression system. The former kitchen and ladies restroom area will be turned into a meeting room for the ladies auxiliary. Funds permitting, the Legion also wants to fix the log courses, clean and preserve the logs and stain them. The Fayetteville organization currently has a membership of 310, doubling the membership total of two years ago. The group meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m., beginning with a potluck dinner. The building is available for rental at a cost of $125 for a half-day (8 a.m. to noon or noon to 5:30 p.m.) and $200 for an evening (6 p.m. to midnight). A $100 security deposit is required to make certain the facility is cleaned up. Contact Jerry Stoner at 770-719-9885. |
