Impact fees on rise for new development in FayettevilleBy JOHN MUNFORD The city of Fayetteville is preparing to increase its impact fees,Êlargely to fund new transportation projects, city officials said. The city charges the impact fees on new construction projects, with the funds going to the citys capital improvements program. Georgia law allows the fees to be used on the theory that it helps take some of the tax burden off property owners who have paid their share into the system for a number of years. Impact fees are not charged on existing structures. Under the new impact fee schedule, a single family residential unit would be assessed a $1,671 fee, an increase of $383. LIkewise, the multifamily impact fee, which is charged per unit, will increase by $316 while specialty retail projects will increase by $586 per 1,000 sq. ft. City Engineer Don Easterbrook noted that the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Georgia Department of Community Affairs has reviewed the impact fee schedule and doesnt have any problems with them. Also, the fee schedule was reviewed by the citys impact fee advisory committee, Easterbrook noted. They seemed to be satisfied, Easterbrook said of the committee. The impact fee ordinance was posted for a first reading at Thursdays city council meeting but wont be voted on until the next council meeting July 15.
