Yoshana Jones, a Westlake High School student, was recognized as the
second prize winner in the Share the Dream Black History Month essay
contest, sponsored by The Cola-Cola Company. She received a $2,500 check
to the college or university of her choice.
In addition to Yoshana, six other Fulton County students participated
in the essay contest Angela Mann from Banneker High School, Ashley
Colette Groves from Centennial High School, Erica Shaffer from Chattahoochee
High School, Crystal Williams from Creekside High School, Robert Mitchell
Finch II from Independence High School and Megan Clark from Northview
High School.
Career Technology Department receives Partnership Award
Fulton County Schools Career Technology Department received a
Partnership Award from the Fulton County Human Services Department and
the Office of Workforce Development for its outstanding support of the
Hooked on Health Program. Twenty-five Health Science Technology students
participated in paid internships over the last four months of the school
year. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who interned at various healthcare
institutions throughout the Atlanta metro area were recognized at a
banquet on June 3. The partnership will continue next school year.
Brookview receives Laura Bush library grant
Brookview Elementary School is the recipient of a $5,000 grant from
the Laura Bush Foundation for Americas Libraries. The grant
will allow the school to purchase additional books for its media
center.
Shakerag Elementary earns National PTA certification
Shakerag Elementary School has joined six other Fulton schools in being
recognized as a School of Excellence for Parent Involvement. The certification,
sponsored by the National PTA, recognizes schools whose parent involvement
programs meet the standards set for parent involvement in schools. Centennial
High School, Findley Oaks Elementary School, Holcomb Bridge Middle School,
Manning Oaks Elementary School, Taylor Road Middle School, and Woodland
Charter Elementary School all have earned the distinction.
VIF Program honors Fulton educators
Mimosa Elementary Principal Jeanne Wood is the first recipient of the
VIFs Excellence in International Education Award. The honor,
created in 2004 by the Visiting International Faculty, a cultural-exchange
program
for international educators, recognizes schools or principals who
are leaders in promoting a global perspective within their schools.
Ms. Wood
was selected for her dedication to the program, which has included
hosting VIF teachers at her school and allowing Mimosa to be the
site of a VIF
professional development conference.
In addition, Autrey Mill Middle School teacher Tania Horan, from South
Africa, and Barnwell Elementary teacher Jo Syms, from the United Kingdom,
were two of five finalists for the title of Georgia Cultural Educator
of the Year, selected from more than 300 VIF teachers in Georgia.
Fulton County Schools budget honored for eighth straight year
For the eighth consecutive year, the Fulton County School System budget
has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from
the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and
Canada. The award is considered the highest form of recognition in
governmental budgeting.
Harold Grindle, assistant superintendent of Business Services, and Jean
Sina, Director
of Budget Development and Control, supervised the FY04 budget that
was honored for meeting and exceeding national guidelines for effective
budget presentation. A panel of independent reviewers determined that
the budget served effectively as a policy document, financial plan, operations
guide, and communication device. Budget documents must be rated proficient in
all four categories to receive the award.
