Brown receives Political Action AwardPeachtree City Mayor Steve Brown received the Political Action Award from the Phi Pi Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., at organization's Fourth Anniversary Celebration June 13 in Newnan. The award was given to Mayor Brown in recognition of his outstanding contributions and dedicated service to the community through his political office. The women in our sorority who live in Fayette County think very highly of Mayor Brown, according to the events general chairperson, Juanita Byrd. The Phi Pi Omega Chapter was chartered in Coweta and Fayette counties in June 2000. Over the past several years, they have initiated several successful community service projects, including voter registration drives, the October coat drive for children in need, the Womens Health Initiative, donations of supplies to schools and nursing homes, and providing college scholarships to teens in the community. In an effort to highlight public service in Coweta and Fayette Counties, the Phi Pi Omega Chapter annually presents awards to outstanding citizens in the community that promote scholarship and service in the local area. Receiving such an honor from an organization comprised predominately of African-American women tells me that I am doing a good job when it comes to promoting fairness and looking out for the needs of all citizens in my community, Brown said upon receiving the award. I am extremely impressed with the women in this organization and the value of the community service that they provide. The other recipient of a Political Action Award was Newnan Councilwoman Cynthia Jenkins, the first African-American woman to hold a seat on the Newnan City Council. She is founder and CEO of G3 Communities, Inc., a local faith-based nonprofit community development corporation. Under her leadership, G3 Communities successfully produces the Annual David Fest, which brings together several churches, organizations, and business sponsors to provide a health fair, college recruitment opportunities, food, and live music. |
