PTC July 4th parade ‘booked solid’

“We are full, 100 percent booked solid,” said Jim O’Connell, a program director for the Peachtree City Recreation Department, which handles the event. This year it is scheduled for Saturday, July 3 since July 4 falls on a Sunday.

There are 189 entries so far this year, including just 49 golf carts, O’Connell said.

The parade was originally intended for golf carts but over the years has grown more elaborate. Last year, 50 percent of the parade entries were commercial in nature, but that number will drop some this year, O’Connell said.

Those on the waiting list will be added into the parade route if others drop out of the event, O’Connell noted.

With more entries in the parade than last year, O’Connell joked that the parade lineup might have to run all the way back to Ga. Highway 85.

At Thursday night’s City Council meeting, council members asked staff to include commercial entries in the parade which had been put on a waiting list in hopes of limiting the commercial entries to a maximum of 25 percent of the entire parade.

In 2001, 54 of the 161 parade entries were commercial, but in 2002 84 of the 191 entries were commercial, noted City Manager Bernie McMullen. Again in 2003, almost half of the parade entries were commercial, taking up 90 of 188 entries in the parade.
