Missing Fayette girl found safe; now in custody of DFCS

Phone system used for alert after mother left DFCS office

A 2-year-old Fayette County girl who was the subject of a missing persons alert Tuesday afternoon was found unharmed the next day at a relative’s home in Alabama, police said.

The alert was issued after officials from the Fayette County Department of Family and Children Services told sheriff’s deputies that the girl’s mother took her from the DFCS office after being notified the girl was being taken into state custody, said Lt. Col. Bruce Jordan, director of investigations for the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.

The mother was arrested last week on drug charges, and had apparently failed a drug test, Jordan noted.

Because the girl might have been in danger due to the drug allegations, the missing persons alert was issued to some Fayette homes via a special recorded phone message, Jordan said.

No charges will likely be filed against the mother, Jordan said. The child is now in custody of DFCS officials, he added.

After the phone alert was issued, a number of people contacted the sheriff’s department and offered to help look for the girl, Jordan said.

“It showed us how good the people are here in Fayette County,” Jordan added.
