Parents who were hoping students would have a full week off during the fall of 2005 will have to change those travel plans.

The Fayette County Board of Education approved the 2005-2006 calendar Tuesday night that features a miniature break in the fall.

Students will be released from school early Thursday, Oct. 20, and have Friday and Monday off from studies.

Other features of the 2005 calenda, include:

• Starting school Aug. 8.

• Having a full week off for Thanksgiving.

• Ending the first semester Dec. 21.

• Scheduling winter break from Feb.20-24.

• Keeping spring break the first week of April.

• Ending school May 26.

As the calendar options were discussed, some of the board members posed questions about scheduling questions.

Board member Lee Wright wondered how it would affect children starting school back on Thursday, Jan. 5, instead of the following Monday.

“We started on a Friday one year, and I heard the kids were calmed down, since they just had to go to school for one day, and then have the weekend to recover,” said board member Greg Powers.

The calendar passed by a 3-1 motion. Members Janet Smola, Greg Powers and Lee Wright supported it, while chairman Terri Smith voted against it. Board member Marion Key was not present for the vote.
