Bigger sidewalk with trees, lighting planned for downtown Fayetteville

To make downtown Fayetteville more pedestrian-friendly, city officials are planning special “streetscape” enhancements along Lanier Avenue between Tiger Trail and Ga. Highway 85.

The concept of the project is to create a wider sidewalk,Êlikely along the south side of the road, said City Engineer Don Easterbrook. The sidewalk, as currently planned, would have trees on either side and decorative lighting, Easterbrook added.

“It’s not your typical sidewalk,” Easterbrook said.

A public meeting on the enhancements is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The project will largely be funded with a grant from the Livable Centers Initiative, an arm of the Atlanta Regional Commission designed to enhance areas where people can live, work and play, therefore cutting down on the need for auto traffic.

The sidewalk would connect The Villages at LaFayette Park and Fayette County High School to the downtown area.

The city has been successful recently in securing grants to add more sidewalks, particularly in areas that will serve several schools.
