The Fayette County varsity boys soccer team made it to the Elite Eight this year, but lost 4-0 in the quarterfinal round to Brookwood, the team that made it to Friday night’s state final against the Starr’s Mill Panthers.

Sometimes that’s the way the ball bounces, and sometimes the ball bounces high and is lost in the sun.

Fayette County fell behind early to Brookwood, 2-0. The second goal came after Brookwood launched a ball high in the air and goalkeeper Jeff Cooley lost track of it in the sun.

The Tigers lost the coin toss at the beginning of the game and knew the sun would play a part in the first half. It did.

‘We knew the longer we could keep it close, the better chance we had for pulling out a win,” said Coach Ben Thacker.

The Broncos added two more goals in the second half for the win. The Tigers finished the season 16-4-1.

“We have a lot to be proud of,” said Thacker. “This was the highest ranked team we ever had as a program and our senior class was filled with incredible leaders. I’m very proud of this team’s effort. We never quit, even when we were down 4-0.”
