Local teams begin state playoff runs

Landmark’s varsity baseball team completed its bid for back-to-back region championships by downing Heard County 5-1 Friday. Kyle Gray hurled a no-hitter while Tim Perkins and Dylan Hanes led the offense with two hits and one RBI apiece.

Rome Smith was solid behind the plate and the team played outstanding defense, particularly Hanes and Tyler Tidwell who combined for a perfect 7-for-7 assists in the field.

Landmark will host Gordon-Lee this Friday at 1 p.m. in the first round of the state playoffs. The series will consist of a doubleheader Friday and a 1 p.m. rubber game Saturday if needed.

Starr’s Mill will open the AAAAA state playoffs at home as well when they host Valdosta in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and a rubber match at 11 a.m. Saturday if needed. Fayette County will travel to Lee County at 4 p.m. Thursday to start their state playoff run. If necessary, they will play the deciding game Friday.
