Extra signs for Summit Point scoffed by council

A request for additional signs at the Summit Point mixed-use development in south Fayetteville was met with skepticism from the City Council Thursday night.

The extra signs are being sought to identify the Publix grocery store, which is set to open in September, and the residential subdivision that will be located behind Publix and the other stores.

The ground signs, however, would be placed on five out parcels that will be home to different businesses however. Without the variance, those businesses will not be allowed their one ground sign allowed by city ordinance, said Jahnee Prince, the city’s director of planning and zoning.

Several council members said they didn’t think they had a solid grasp on how Concordia’s extra ground signs will finally look when implemented.

Councilman Al Hovey-King said Summit Point is “extremely important” for the south side of town and thus it’s appropriate for council to exercise caution with the sign plans.

"It behooves us to take the time to do it right,” Hovey-King said.

Council voted 5-0 to table the matter.
