The city of Senoia is serious about catching speeders.

During Monday night’s City Council meeting, the council unanimously approved purchasing a $3,500 laser to hone in on catching speeders on Ga. Highway 16.

“I’ve caught some people going over 90 [miles per hour],” said Sergeant Jason Edens.

Edens said state statistics show that 79 percent of serious accidents have speed involved, and the laser system is much easier to defend in court.

Since the lasers are so effective, policeman are able to stage their patrol cars behind trees and point their laser at potential speeders. When using radar guns, the patrol officers have to be in plainer view for the radar to work.

“All you have to do is point and shoot, and you have a reading,” he said.

In other news:

• Mayor Robert Hannah announced the system had reached an agreement with the county about providing sewerage to the city’s ballfields. The county leases the fields from the city and has agreed to provide up to $70,000 is work to get sewer pipes run to the facility, as long as the city pays for all engineering costs.

“This will allow us to provide sewer to the ballfields and the new public works building and only have to pay for engineering,” Hannah said.

Hannah said he would bring the contract back for the City Council to sign.

• City attorney Drew Whalen announced he was waiting for one final piece of information before he could instruct the city on how to word their liquor referendum. The city has voted to call for a liquor by the drink and package liquor sales vote in the fall. Whalen is waiting for Coweta County’s liquor ordinance to be finalized and sent to the city.
