Sheriff wants trailer parks cleaned up

Sheriff Mike Yeager has seen enough.

Yeager told the Coweta County Commission Tuesday that his patrol officers have seen numerous “unsafe structures” in the Autumn’s Gate trailer park on Ga. Highway 16.

“There’s abandoned trailer, and appliances strewn through the woods,” Yeager said.

The sheriff also cited concerns for the Newnan House on U.S. Highway 29 south and Travel Inn at U.S. Highway 29 north.

“There are some really deplorable conditions that are out of the realm of law enforcement,” Yeager added.

The sheriff asked the county for help in trying to crack down on some of the code violations that were taking place. Commission chairman Vernon “Mutt” Hunter said it would fall under the environmental health department to examine the conditions at the various sites, along with code enforcement officers.

But with only one code enforcement officer for the whole county, sometimes things get overlooked.

“I’m asking staff to find a way to at least hire one more code enforcement officer in the next budget cycle,” said Commissioner Larry DeMoss.

With only one enforcement officer in place, DeMoss said he is only able to respond to complaints, and not able to go out and ride the county and check for other violations.

The County Commission assured Yeager that would start working on the problems immediately.
