Fundraiser ongoing for PhillipsStephanie Phillips, a senior at Fayette County High School and a member of the the Lady Tigers softball team,Êhas been battling cancer for the past five years. In August of 2003 she had hip replacement surgery, which lasted 12 hours and required a two-week hospital stay. In addition, she developed an infection which required six more hours of surgery and more hospitalization. After coming home for a few weeks and then having to go back for yet one more surgery because she was not healing properly, she finally got to go home, though she was on IV antibiotics and bedridden for several months. Phillips finally started to feel better around the first of this year and was getting around really good on crutches. She even went back to school, but in February she started getting pain in her left hip that would not go away. The doctors started the scan process again and have found that the cancer has resurfaced in her right femur. Phillips started daily radiation treatments last week and she will also be taking chemotherapy for three weeks. The radiation is only three weeks long because the cancer is only in her leg and they can give a higher dose and not have to worry about damaging surrounding organs. After three weeks of this they will do a PET scan again and determine the next course of action. The Fayette County High School Softball Booster Club is sponsoring a fundraiser for Phillips starting this week. They are selling Joe Corbis Pizza and Caramel Cheesecakes. If anyone is interested in participating, brochures and order forms can be picked up at the front office of the school during school hours. All orders and monies must be turned in by Monday, May 10 and then items will be picked up at the FCHS Commons Saturday, May 22 from 9 a.m.-noon. For additional information, contact Merrilee Norman at 770-460-6128 or MSN0919@aol.com. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be presented to the Phillips Family.
