McIntosh tennis captures region titles againBy MICHAEL BOYLAN The road to another region tennis title for the McIntosh boys featured shutouts over Mundys Mill (3-0) and Newnan (4-0) before edging out Starrs Mill in the region final (3-2). The Lady Chiefs captured their region crown by beating Carver (3-0), East Coweta (3-0) and their own tough match with Starrs Mill (3-2). Last year, the McIntosh Lady Chiefs made the state finals while the McIntosh boys and the Starrs Mill boys and girls made the state semifinals. Phil Van Fossan, the number one singles for the boys, went 2-1, losing to Starrs Mills Derrick Davison, 3-6. 4-6. Stefan James, the number two singles for the Chiefs went 2-0, defeating Starrs Mills Adam Esterline, 6-0, 6-0. His match against Mundys Mill was pulled. Osman Farqui, the number three singles, lost to Erick Jackson, 4-6, 3-6. The number one doubles team of Joe Styaa and Francois Pienaar went 3-0 beating Keith Kowal and Evan Foster, 6-1, 6-4. The number two doubles team of Hoot Fisher and Patrick Thomas went 3-0 as well, defeating Starrs Mills Ben Matlaga and Thomas Davisson in the finals, 7-6 (9-7), 4-6, 4-6. In the girls matches, Priscilla Roberts, the number one singles, went 2-0 before losing to Starrs Mills Jenny Shular, 4-6, 2-6. Adriane Hodges went 3-0 and beat Gabby Acuna 6-4, 6-3 in the finals. Rebecca Timmis, the number three singles, went 2-0 and defeated Lindsay Dillon, 6-4, 6-0. The number one doubles team of Shelby Carlson and Kristin Cobb went 1-1, falling to Shayna Simmons and Kitty Ireland, 5-7, 5-7. The number two doubles team of Stephanie Daughenbaugh and Lyndsi Tufte got on the court once, with previous matches being pulled or unnecessary, and won 6-3, 6-2. The Lady Chiefs and the Panther boys hosted Wayne County in the first round of the state playoffs yesterday after the paper went to press and the McIntosh boys and Starrs Mill girls will host Camden County at 3 p.m. this afternoon at the Peachtree City Tennis Center. |
