Bond hearing put off for murder suspect

It’s not every day that a defense attorney asks a judge to postpone considering bond for a criminal suspect.

But Tom Cook did just that Thursday morning as he represented murder suspect Tommy Ingram, who is accused of stabbing to death Terry Durham, 44, in a drug-related killing April 2.

Cook said another court hearing in the case was scheduled in the matter Tuesday that could make the issuance of bond a moot point. He also noted that Ingram was indigent and likely wouldn’t be able to meet a high bond, which is typically set for murder defendants.

Cook asked Fayette Superior Court Judge Paschal A. English Jr. to hold off on the hearing, and English agreed.

“There is strong evidence in this case he may have been acting in self-defense,” Cook said, noting Ingram’s injuries from being struck with a pipe were documented.

Cook noted that Ingram has lived in Fayette County all his life and has been on disability since 1996 with an ankle injury. Ingram has lived with his mother in east Fayette County, with social security payments as his only source of income, Cook said.

A second suspect was originally charged with Durham’s murder, but charges were dropped after it was determined he did not play a role in the killing, police said. Police said Ingram and Durham fought over who was going to sleep in a room in the house at 133 Butler Road in the Kenwood Road area where the incident took place.

Police confirmed the house was a known location for drug activity.
