New police station, courthouse underway

A ceremonial groundbreaking was held Friday morning for Fayetteville’s new Law Enforcement Center.

The two-story police station will be connected to the one-story municipal court building by an interior corridor. The design includes 209 parking spaces because officials wanted to counter the parking problems currently experienced when municipal court is convened at City Hall.

The project, which came in $1.2 million under the city’s original estimates, is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year. The final bid came in just under $4 million and the project will be financed through the Georgia Municipal Association.

The 6.63-acre site is at the intersection of Jimmie Mayfield Avenue and Bradley Drive. The 25,000 sq. ft. facility will be built with a brick exterior and reflective glass, providing “downtown Fayetteville” design elements also.

The police headquarters will have a juvenile interview and retention area, conference room and record storage areas. Also included are locker rooms, training and workout rooms and an armory.

Areas for alcohol testing and fingerprinting of suspects were also designed into the building along with an evidence room.

The site plan includes landscaping and buffers to make the site more aesthetically pleasing.

The building was designed by the Leo A. Daly architectural firm and the contractor is Group VI of Peachtree City.
