Jordan ‘keeps the peace’ at his salvage yard

When downtown businessman Robert Jordan appeared before the Fayetteville City Council last week, it wasn’t to complain.

Sure, a city code enforcement officer paid a visit to his salvage yard several times to make sure his inventory didn’t pour onto the sidewalk. But Jordan knew the city wasn’t behind it. It was likely a disgruntled customer calling city hall to complain, he said.

“He was just doing his job,” Jordan said of the city code enforcer who dropped in. “There wasn’t nobody picking on me. ... Everybody on the city council, the mayor and city manager, they’re fair. They all understand,” Jordan said.

Jordan takes the appearance of his “store” literally. He uses heavy-duty pool tarps to cover the merchandise when closed for business, to keep the place looking neat.

And Jordan won’t take any gruff from visitors, either. Recently, he kicked a customer off his property for cussing.

Such transgressions are taken seriously at Jordan Sales and Salvage, the proprietor says.

“When people are out here I’ve got to keep the peace,” Jordan said. “I can’t have people cussing and raising hell in front of my customers. ... If you and your family are here, I feel responsible.

“I asked him to leave — that’s all I could do.”

Jordan said he isn’t proud about “arguing with anybody” but he doesn’t mind taking a stand when necessary. To him, it’s about maintaining a reputation.

“We run a real respectable business,” Jordan said. “We’ve been down here all these years.”

Fayetteville has a good reputation in Jordan’s eyes. And by “keeping the peace” at his place, Jordan intends to keep doing his part.

“We’ve got a nice little city,” he said. “If all of us put our shoulders together, we can keep it that way.”
