Tigers shock Chiefs 3-2

The Fayette County Tigers struck for three goals in the final five minutes to upset the McIntosh Chiefs, the state’s top-ranked team, 3-2 in local soccer action Friday night in Fayetteville.

After an 0-2 start, the Tigers have now won 11 games in a row. The McIntosh win comes less than a week after a 2-0 defeat of Centennial, also one of the top 10 ranked teams in the state.

After a scoreless first half Friday night, the Chiefs got on the scoreboard first at the 28-minute mark of the second half, then made it a 2-0 game just 10 minutes later.

The Tigers broke their scoring drought on a header by Jay Page with 4:53 to play. Page then tied the match with 3:51 left as the home crowd erupted.

The winning shot came when Bryan Collier took a pass from Ryan Whitehead and drilled it toward the goal. McIntosh keeper Glen Fox blocked it, but Collier blasted the rebound into the back of the net with 43 seconds left in the match, stunning the McIntosh fans and causing the Fayette county faithful to storm the field after the final horn.

“These guys played with such heart and refused to give up,” said FCHS Coach Ben Thacker. “Even when we went down 2-0, I could see that we were not done. We kept our composure and turned it up a notch. When you play hard and play together, good things happen.”
