WWII event Saturday at Falcon Field a throwback to the past

The public is invited to take a step back to yesteryear with the Dixie Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, which will host World War II Day at its Peachtree City facility Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The event at the CAF hangar, dubbed the “Historical Airpower Facility,” will feature military re-enactors and military vehicles and rides in operational World War II aircraft. Breakfast and lunch will be served at a USO-style canteen and army mess tent.

There will also be educational displays and activities for the whole family, including swing dance lessons for mom and dad.

Admission is free, but each spectator is asked to bring a canned food item for the Fayette Samaritans food pantry.

There will be a charge for aircraft rides with proceeds beenfitting “Education Through Living History,” a World War II history program presented by Dixie Wing volunteers. The program is available to area schools and youth groups free of charge.

The event will be held rain or shine but pets should be left at home.

The Historical Airpower Facility is located at Falcon Field and is accessed off Victor Road and Echo Court.

The Commemorative Air Force is a non-profit group that restores, maintains and flies World War II aircraft while also maintaining museum facilities for aircraft in tribute to the men and women who built, serviced and flew the planes.
