Health fair held at Banneker High

Banneker High School will host its second annual Health Fair today. It is open to the school’s 1,300+ student body, faculty, and staff, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Twenty local vendors, including local doctors, pharmacists, dentists, and other medical experts, will be on hand to provide health and safety information. Blood pressure and dental screenings, breast exams, and diabetes and sickle cell anemia screenings will be offered in addition to seizure, asthma, depression, fire safety, and drunk driving information. A “healthy food court” will offer tips for nutritious eating and samples of healthy snacks.

Last year’s event was so well attended that organizers Margaret Walker, Banneker cluster nurse, and Ceola Johnson, school clinic assistant, decided to make it an annual affair after discussing it with Principal Dewitt Walker.

“You can tell the information hits home with the students because they are really interested in what see,” Walker,”Walker said. “This fair allows us to promote healthy habits and provide resources that our students and parents can use to assess their own wellness.” Banneker High School is located at 5935 Feldwood Road in College Park.
