| Camp Invention coming to East Fayette Elem. Camp Invention, a nationally-recognized creativity and science camp, is coming to East Fayette Elementary School July 12-16. The camp’s hands-on curriculum gives children a chance to let their inventive juices flow and their imaginations run wild. “We are very pleased to host Camp Invention, which is open to all children in Fayette County,” said Louis Robinson, principal at East Fayette Elementary School. “The camp truly provides an enriching experience that combines learning with lots and lots and lots of fun.” Camp Invention is designed to promote inventive thinking, creativity and teamwork by providing children with hands-on activities in five fun-filled modules. In a module called “Planet Zak,” campers will use creative problem solving to get back to earth after crash-landing on imaginary planet. In “I Can Invent,” campers disassemble old appliances and use the parts to make their own invention. They learn about safety in “Spills and Chills,” making safety devices for cars, skateboards and even an egg. In “SOS: Suddenly Shipwrecked,” children explore a deserted island to learn more about its inhabitants. And in “Amazing Games” they enjoy high-energy recreational activities. Camp Invention is for children entering grades two through six in the fall of 2004. Camp hours are 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Camp Invention is a project of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, a nonprofit center for creativity, in Akron, Ohio. In 2004 it will be held in partnership with approximately 800 schools nationwide. Articles about the camp’s innovative curriculum have been featured in more than 20 national education publications and on CNN’s Student News. “I encourage everyone to register early to guarantee a space because registration is limited to 110 children,” said Mary Lou Goehring, a gifted teacher at North Fayette Elementary School who is serving as camp director. She heads up a staff of Fayette County teachers who will lead the activities. “With so few camp opportunities like this in Fayette County, we anticipate an excellent response.” Through May 31, registration is $199.
