| Local teams win big in early matches Going into this week’s first head-to-head meeting, the tennis teams from McIntosh and Starr’s Mill have several early-season match victories under their belts. In boys action, the Panthers swept Carver March 16 in region play. Singles wins were recorded by Eric Jackson, Ben Matlaga and Thomas Davisson, while the doubles team of Keith Kowal and Adam Esterline was victorious, as were Evan Foster and Willie Hughes. The Panthers swept East Coweta Thursday and the Lady Panthers won 3-2. Nationally-ranked freshman Derrick Davison made his debut in the #1 singles position with a win, with Jackson and Esterline also picking up singles wins. Kowal and Matlaga prevailed in doubles, along with Duncan Conner and Ryan Cook. Lindsey Dillon won her singles match for Starr’s Mill, and both doubles teams were also victorious: Kitty Ireland and Ashley Szcpaniec, and Allison Blair and Ashley Stock. The Panthers lost a nonregion meet Monday to Athens Academy by a 3-2 score, while the Lady Panthers prevailed 4-1. Jackson won his singles match, while Matlaga and Foster won in doubles. On the girls’ side, winners included Dillon and Jenny Shular in singles, along with the doubles teams of Ireland/Shayna Simmons and Kristin Thornton/Joanna Tolsma. Starr’s Mill and McIntosh are scheduled to meet on the court tomorrow. The Chiefs and Lady Chiefs are also off to a hot start, with both squads winning the Peachtree City Tennis Center Invitational by impressive margins. The boys swept each of their three matches 5-0, while the girls only lost one match out of 15, in the final against Spalding. McIntosh also picked up an early-season region win against Newnan, 5-0 for the boys and 4-1 for the girls. Winners for the Chiefs included Phil VanFossan, Stefan James and Osman Faruqi in singles, plus Hoot Fisher/Joe Styga and Quan Li/Francois Pienaar in doubles. For the Lady Chiefs, Stephanie Daughenbaugh and Lyndsi Tufte won their singles matches, with doubles wins coming from Lauren Wilde/Jessica Piester and Kristin Cobb/Keegan Vining.
