Chiefs holding top spot in state The McIntosh Chiefs, currently ranked first in the state in AAAAA and sixth in the nation by Student Sports magazine, scored wins last week over Newnan (4-2) and Lassiter (3-1) to move to 12-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in Region 4-AAAAA. The team has scored 77 goals and given up five, according to coach Bunky Colvin. Junior Patrick Murray has scored 12 goals to go with 15 assists so far in 2004, while Glenn Fox has had 3 goals scored against him in 12 games. Junior Nader Jarun has 8 goals and 7 assists, while freshman Michael Mateos has 6 goals and 6 assists. Sweeper Daniel Hershey is rated as one of the top backs in the country, Colvin said. The Lady Chiefs only game of the week was a 2-1 win over Newnan. They are now 7-1 overall and 6-0 in region play. The Starrs Mill Panthers downed Mundys Mill 15-0 last week and battled Walton to a scoreless tie. The Panthers are 3-0-1 in the region and 6-2-2 overall. The Lady Panthers also won 15-0 over Mundys Mill, their only match of the week. The Fayette County Tigers improved their record to 9-2 with an 8-0 win March 16 over Northgate, a 3-2 victory over East Coweta Friday and a 2-0 shutout Saturday of the states sixth-ranked team, Centennial. After East Coweta scored the opening goal Friday, Jay Jay Page scored on a corner kick with 2:53 left in the first half and Bryan Collier scored with 43 seconds on the clock to put the Tigers up 2-1 at halftime. East Coweta scored 10 minutes into the second half to tie the match, but Collier scored the winner with 10:43 to play. Ryan Whitehead had two assists for the Tigers. These area matches mean a lot and the guys played with a lot of intensity, said coach Ben Thacker. We have had some injuries that have hurt us lately. They were down a goal and just refused to give up; Im really proud of them. In Saturdays matchup the Tigers fought the Centennial Knights to a scoreless first half. Page scored on a Collier assist with 16:59 to go, then Page returned the favor by assisting Collier with 9:34 left in the match. But the real story, according to Thacker, was the way the Tigers played in the defensive end. The match really turned on how well we were going to be able to defend them, he said. Centennial is so powerful offensively, and our defense really stepped up. Defenders Josh Joslin, Ben Eldridge, Jim Chen, Bryan McBride, Anthony Schwartz, Chris Rawson, Ryan Mickey and keeper Jeff Cooley all played great games. They played with incredible effort. The Lady Tigers dropped three games last week, to Northgate (1-0), East Coweta (2-0) and Centennial (5-1). They are now 5-6-1 overall and 2-1 in the region. The Sandy Creek Patriots lost 4-3 to Lovejoy March 16 and took a 2-5 overall record and an 0-2 region mark into Fridays match against Region 4-AAAA opponent North Clayton. The Lady Patriots defeated Lovejoy 2-1 behind goals by Ally Treat and Katie Wilson. They followed that up with a 10-0 win over North Clayton Friday night. Treat scored four goals in that contest. The team is now 5-2-1 overall and 2-1 in region play. Whitewater took on Fayette Countys JV in a recent doubleheader.
