No Sunday liquor sales in Coweta By JOHN THOMPSON If residents want a drink with their Sunday brunch, they need to head to Peachtree City. The Coweta County Commission sent a clear message Tuesday night about how they feel about possible Sunday liquor sales. After residents approved liquor by the drink in the unincorporated county earlier this month, questions sprang up about Sunday sales. But Commissioner Leigh Schlumper ended all speculation when she asked the board to not even consider an agenda item for Sunday sales this year. “I can’t commit what a future board might do, but this is my intention,” she said. Schlumper said she wants the county’s ordinance to mirror the city of Newnan’s, which does not allow Sunday sales. Other elements to be included in the ordinance include a $5,000 licensing fee and quarterly reporting of sales. “People should know that we’re not allowing bars in the county. This only applies to restaurants who want to serve it,” she said. With a $5,000 fee, Schlumper doesn’t expect “wing shacks” to start applying for the permit. County restaurants could start pouring this summer. In other news, the County Commission: • Appointed three residents to the new library board. The board will help oversee construction and operation of the new library on Lower Fayetteville Road. Amy Whitlock, Scott Stallings and Nancy Tinsley are the new appointees. • Approved two variance requests for two more commercial businesses on Ga. Highway 34. A CVS store at the intersection of Hwy.34 and Sullivan Road received a variance for landscaping issues because of the size of the lot. On the other corner of Sullivan Road, Southern Community Bank was allowed to build with 10 feet of street frontage instead of 20 feet.
