Local "STAR" Students and Teachers Recognized by Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club

Jennifer Williams of Creekside High School and Joseph Vellanikaran of Woodward Academy were recently named 2004 STAR high school students. The announcement was made at a Feb. 24, 2004, breakfast hosted by the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club, the local sponsor of the Fulton County District 3B STAR program. Williams selected Scott Vaughan as her STAR teacher. Vellanikaran selected Charles Bryant as his STAR teacher.

The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program was created to focus public attention on Georgia's outstanding students and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. During the past 45 years, the STAR program has honored more than 18,500 high school seniors who have in turn chosen their STAR teachers to share in this recognition. To obtain the STAR nomination, students must have the highest score in one sitting on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) taken through the November test date of their senior year, and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in their class.

High school STAR students compete for system titles; and system STAR students in turn compete for district-wide honors in the STAR Districts. District winners and their STAR teacher are invited to compete in Atlanta for the state STAR awards. The STAR program is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) Foundation, Inc., the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education.

"The STAR student and teacher program is one of Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club's most highly anticipated events. It allows us to share our pride in both student and teacher achievements, as well as their commitment to education," said Sandy Murray, president of the Midtown Atlanta Rotary Club. The civic group commemorates over a decade of sponsoring the STAR Student awards ceremony.
