Four state-ranked teams played on the same field Friday night as the boys and girls teams from Starr’s Mill and McIntosh squared off in a pair of early-season matches that figure to have a large impact on the Region 4-AAAAA race.

It was the only match of the week for both boys squads, which battled to a scoreless tie. The Chiefs are now 10-0-1 on the season, while the Panthers’ record moves to 5-2-1.

The girls’ match was a 3-0 win for McIntosh, which improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in region play. The Lady Chiefs beat Carver 15-0 earlier in the week, just after their first loss of 2004 came at the hands of Milton. The Lady Panthers are now 6-1-2 overall and 2-1 in the region.

Fayette County played Sandy Creek Saturday night and, like the previous night’s intracounty matches, there was a win and a tie. The Tigers defeated the Patriots 10-0 in their nonregion match, after wins over Eagle’s Landing (7-2) and Lovejoy (9-3) earlier in the week. They are now 6-2 overall and 2-0 in region play.

The Patriots, who defeated Creekside 5-2 March 8, fell to 2-4 overall. They are 0-2 in Region 4-AAAA competition.

After a 1-1 result Saturday in girls’ action, the Lady Tigers are 5-3-1 and 2-0-0, while the Lady Patriots are 3-2-1 and 1-1-0. Fayette County beat Eagle’s Landing 2-1 and Lovejoy 3-0 last week.

The squads from Whitewater High, playing varsity and JV teams, are off to a good start in 2004. The girls opened with a 1-1 tie against McIntosh, a 7-0 win over Alexander, ad 15-0 win over Pebblebrook’s varsity, and a 3-1 win over Northgate. The boys have beaten Pike County 6-0, tied McIntosh in a scoreless game, beaten Lithia Springs 2-0, won 8-0 over Alexander, defeated Pebblebrook’s varsity 4-2 and won over Northgate by a 2-1 score.
