Bank’s sign request denied by council

A bank planning to open in Fayette Pavilion will not get the extra signage it sought from the Fayetteville City Council.

The council turned down the request from Washington Mutual at its regular meeting last week.

A bank representative said the sign variance request was largely because the company’s insurance company wants to make sure the drive-through lanes are well-labeled.

But as councilman Larry Dell pointed out, the sign above the drive-through lanes had “Washington Mutual” in large letters.

“This does not identify the drive-through,” Dell said. “It’s simple signage.”

Dell objected to the idea that the sign would cut down on the company’s liability; it appeared obvious the sign was to promote the bank, he indicated. Councilman Walt White said he agreed.

Washington Mutual also requested a larger wall sign to make it easier for armored trucks to find the location, the bank spokesperson told the council.

The bank will be located in a building near H.H. Gregg along with two other tenants. City staff had recommended denial of the sign variance request.

The council voted 4-1 to deny the request, with councilman Glenn Brewer against. Brewer had said he would consider approving the wall signs if their size was reduced.
