McIntosh places 2nd at regional Science Olympiad The McIntosh High School Science Olympiad team captured second place Feb. 28 among 20 Georgia high schools in regional competition at Georgia Perimeter College, qualifying them to move on to state competition March 27 at Emory University. The state tournament determines which high schools will represent Georgia at this years 20th national competition May 21 in Pennsylvania. Science Olympiad at the high school level includes 23 events, with a maximum team of 15 students. Five McIntosh students received first-place awards in their team events, nine won second-place honors and two placed third. Several McIntosh students competed as a backup team in the same regional event. Cumulative scores for all events determined total rankings for each team. McIntosh first-place event winners were Kevin Christ, Patrick Thomas, Whitney Baker, Steve Piasta and Christine Hedge. Second-place winners were Karen Christ, Sarah Wilder, Hannah Lee, Patrick McAllister, Michael Forsyth, Ashleigh Murphy, Michael Massengale, Kyle Koonce and Jonathan Hung. Derrick Faunce and Lydia Kalinke won third-place honors. Science Olympiad events include such challenges as balsa airplane flying, bottle rockets, disease detection, astronomy, forestry, robotics and others. McIntosh science teachers Michael DeLisle and Stephanie Sisk coach this years team, with assistance from several adult volunteers.
