Panthers win area title

The Starr’s Mill Panthers won the 2003-2004 Area 4-AAAAA wrestling championship last weekend, with Fayette County finishing second and East Coweta coming in third.

Fayette County held a slim one-point lead over the Panthers going into the championship and third-place matches.

The team standings behind Starr’s Mill (228) and Fayette County (197.5) were East Coweta (148), Newnan (103.5), McIntosh (96), Mundy’s Mill (8) and Lovejoy (4).

The Tigers are sending wrestlers in all 14 weight categories to the state meet this weekend in Macon. Area champions for Fayette County include Richie Powell (152), Brandon Bankieris (189) and Drake McCoy (275).

Area champions for Starr’s Mill include Cory Radcliffe (112), Stephen Savage (119), Devin King (125), Tyler Kourajian (130), Mike Cosper (135), Davey Woods (145), Patrick Kellerman (160) and Bradley Conner (215). The Panthers and Tigers went head-to-head in five title matches.

Finishing second for Fayette County were Julius Eason (103), Thomas Lowery (112), Jeremy Fowler (130), Chris Gilmore (135), Zach Stanley (145) and Tyler Betsill (171). Ryan McNally (125) came in third for the Tigers, along with Colin Evans (160) and Matt Dyer (215). Michael Bowra (119) and Cory Woodruff (140) finished fourth.

Four Starr’s Mill wrestlers recorded third-place finishes and will move on to state: Derek King (103), Matt Hartpence (140), David Drake (171) and David Edison (189).

The McIntosh Chiefs are sending nine qualifiers and three alternates to state. Cameron Hall (160) was second in the area. Finishing third were Chase Little (119), Davarion Smith (130) and Jeff Patrie (135). Coming in fourth were Brett Buehler (103), Landis Ford (145), Andy Ellinas (152), Scott Ritter (171) and Thomas Beck (189). Fifth-places finishers for the Chiefs, going to state as alternates, are Chris Cool (125), Matt Penn (140) and Adam Dale (215).

The state meet begins Friday at 10 a.m. at Macon Coliseum.
