F’ville company offers new choice in dog care

Tails are wagging. Mouths are drooling. The students are eager and panting. Once the instructor arrives, the excitement begins. It’s all part of the basic obedience classes now offered several times a week at Doggie Day Care of Fayette.

The curriculum for this school is a little different from what most students are accustomed to. The focus of this six-week course is to master the commands of heel, sit, stay, come and down. Of course, all the students in this class have four paws and a tail, but they do bring their two-legged companions with them (someone has to drive the car!).

Doggie Day Care is the culmination of a vision, a love for dogs and a lot of hard work on the part of owner, Paula Krause. This special day care offers an alternative to dogs being left alone at home while their owners go to work or run errands. Doggie Day Care also allows the canines a place to socialize, make friends, play and learn to overcome fearful behaviors. Regular guests also have the opportunity for sleepovers at Doggie Day Care.

Now the adventure for dogs is expanding with the addition of basic obedience classes for puppies and adult dogs. While puppies are being exposed to basic obedience and socialization for the first time, adult dogs may either be attending as a first-timer or for a “refresher.”

Instructors work closely with the owners and their pets during class explaining canine behavior, proper techniques in training and how to get preferred results. The class is hard work, but a lot of fun, too. They also advise that routine homework is essential in order to insure your pet learns the desired behaviors.

Basic obedience classes are taught by Greg Franklin of ABC Dog Training and Anne Hudson of FunPups. Both instructors have extensive knowledge in dog training. Franklin’s experience began with pet dogs as he trained an extremely destructive dog who later progressed to win Best in Breed at a local AKC show. Franklin has also worked with professional dogs in law enforcement training and was a State Certified Law Enforcement Instructor. Hudson’s affiliations include the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, Canine Outreach Inc. and Therapy Dogs Inc.

Soon there will also be classes in conformation training for those who wish to participate in dog shows in addition to classes in agility training.

It’s a howling good time for everyone as students definitely “raise their paws” to salute the great training they receive at Doggie Day Care.
