Local Journalist Speaks to Fayette Writers Group

Writing is Michael Boylan’s forte. As a young student living in Beverly, Mass., he began reading at a very early age, becoming also an avid writer. He has many notebooks filled with his writings. From that time on, his aim in life was evidently to express himself through writing.

In his high school years he wrote movie reviews for the high school paper. When he moved to Peachtree City in the middle of his senior year, he became actively involved on the staff of the McIntosh High School literary magazine, “Voices.”

He never varied in his plans while attending the University of Georgia. He wrote for radio, TV and film productions. He took dramatic writing courses in the theater department, formed a sketch comedy troupe and wrote the original sketches for a radio show on the college station. The show production, “Dead Bulldog Revival,” had 18 episodes and placed third in a National College Broadcast competition for radio variety. Michael graduated from The University of Georgia with a major in journalism and telecommunications.

After college, Michael began working for The Citizen newspaper as the sports editor. Soon after he added the responsibilities of weekend editor as well. After four years, his job changed to covering local government meetings such as Tyrone Town Council, Peachtree City Planning Commission, Library Commission and Airport Authority.

Michael enjoys meeting the people who make up the community. One of the interesting events he covered was the Wayne Newton concert in the Fred Brown Amphitheater. Newton mentioned Michael’s name during the concert. Some members of the International Fan Club were present. As a result, Michael received e-mails of appreciation from many fans around the country about the nice article he had written about Wayne Newton.

His tips for the Fayette Writers Group in writing articles for the newspaper: do your research before writing about any person or event; have good chronological order; and present the interesting facts in a clear precise manner.

Along with Michael’s full-time job, he finds time for his creative writing such as children’s books, plays, and several sketches, which he plans to film. He has written a Thanksgiving poem he hopes will be published by November. Michael still keeps a journal and has read 25 books this past year.

Michael and his wife, Sabine, live in Jonesboro with their three cats.

The Fayette Writers Group meets at the Fayette County Library.
