PTC Greek Orthodox mission celebrates first St. Basil’s Day

The Very Rev. Fr. George Tsahakis, Chancellor, welcomed a crowd of some 100-plus parishioners of the Greek Orthodox Mission of Peachtree City, along with other Fayette and Coweta County residents, to the first annual St. Basil’s Day (Vasilopita) Dinner, held last month at the Gathering Place in Peachtree City.

Tsahakis explained the history of St. Basil’s Day and offered prayers over the Vasilopitas (loaves of bread).

Each person made a donation to St. Basil’s Academy (a Greek Orthodox Orphanage) in New York as he or she came up to receive a slice of bread. Extra loaves were auctioned off and the mission eventually received nearly $1,000 in donations.

Stephen Butler won the gold coin that was offered by Tsahakis and Presbytera Marinda in a Vasilopita she had prepared. All of the children found coins in their slices of the children’s loaf as well.

Dinner prayers were offered and the fun began with a fish fry of Alaskan halibut donated by the Tom Kearns family and prepared by Stephen Butler. A covered dish dinner was provided by the participants. Greek and American dancing took place with music provided compliments of George Skouteris and Costas Soulakos. The younger set enjoyed face painting, courtesy of portrait artist and parishioner, Helen Hayes, assisted by Athina Kazadzis.

The Greek Orthodox Mission of Peachtree City was founded in October, 2003. The mission celebrates Orthros at 8 a.m. and Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m. each Sunday at the Fayette Family YMCA, Huiet Road and Ga. Hwy. 54. All interested parties are invited.
