Panthers swim at Augusta

The Starr’s Mill Panthers swim team ended its regular season Saturday at the Augusta Invitational, which hosted 24 teams, and combined for an overall fourth-place finish as the boys and girls each came in third.

Coach J.B. Campbell was pleased with the results and stated that his team swam extremely well.

Junior Noah Copeland (500 free, 4:52.49) and freshman Lauren Cartwright(200 IM, 2:11.26) had first-place individual finishes. Copeland bettered his Starr’s Mill record in his event by six seconds.

Second-place finishes went to Copeland (200 free, 1:51.21) and sophomore Georgia Highsmith (100 back,1:04.38). Sophomore Mackenzie Garrot (100 breast, 1:10.77) and Cartwright (100 back, 1:04.50) had third-place finishes.

Garrot finished fourth in the 100 free (57.51). Sophomore Scott Adams also had a fourth-place finish in the 100 back (1:05.30). Senior Haynes Finney got two fifth-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:23.90) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.70).

Most of the relay events also placed. The two relay events that placed second were the boys 200 free relay team of Adams, Finney, senior Brandon Watkins and Copeland (1:37.91) and the girls 400 free relay team of junior Heather Highsmith, senior Libby Hardison, G. Highsmith and Cartwright (4:07.36).

Finishing third in the girls 200 medley relay (2:02.18) were G. Highsmith, Garrot, Cartwright and senior Jamie Grace. The boys 200 medley relay team of Adams, senior Bob Wethington, Finney and Copeland finished fourth. A fifth-place finish went to senior Paul Daniel, junior Robert Hawkins, senior Will Raymond and Watkins in the 400 free relay (3:55.35).

Starr’s Mill will next compete in the Fayette County Championships tomorrow at the Washington Park Aquatic Center in Atlanta. The Panthers have won the county meet for the past three years.
