Panthers win MMSAL title

The Rising Starr Middle School Panthers wrestling team won its second consecutive Metro Middle School Athletic League championship last weekend, winning 10 of 12 matches in the finals. The tournament was at Luella Middle School in Henry County.

Competing for the Panthers were J. Allen (champion), B. Ferguson (champion), P. Glaeser, T. Holloman (silver), D. Mallon, C. Sudduth (bronze), D. Watts (champion), D. Wiemann (champion), B. DeBartola (champion), K. Koziol (champion), B. Allmond, C. Benedetti (fourth), B. Hasse, M. Sweat, D. Norton (bronze), K. O’Brien (champion) and N. Baker (bronze).

In the five years since the Metro Middle School Athletic League has held a league wrestling tournament, Rising Starr has finished first three times and second twice. This year’s team was the first to take the championship two years in a row.

According to Rising Starr team representatives, middle school students can only compete in seventh and eighth grades, which makes it difficult to repeatedly win as most of the starters are eighth-graders and move up to high school after each season.

“The team lost several team matches early in the season, but never lost focus of maximizing their potential,” according to a team statement. “This group of wrestlers performed their best at the end of the season.”

The Panthers were coached this season by Dennis Bogumill and Paul Ferguson.

The J.C. Booth Middle School Warriors wrestling team concluded its successful 2003-2004 season with a sixth-place finish in the 11-team league.

Eighth-graders Jessy Toscano (100 lbs.), Doug Taylor (110) and David Rogers (185) earned second-place silver medals, while eighth-grader Richard Hughes (105) recorded a third-place finish and eighth-grader Carl Scheumann (120) and seventh-grader Clint Ford (75) secured fourth-place finishes.
