Spivey Hall concert to be broadcast

Treat yourself to a Spivey Hall concert in the comfort of your own home. Tune in to WABE-FM (90.1) at 9 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 2, and again on Sunday, Feb. 9, to hear guest composer Alvin Singleton in a concert presented by Clayton State's Department of Music and Spivey Hall.

On Feb. 2, hear Singleton's compositions: “Fifty Times Around the Sun” performed by clarinetist Ted Gurch and pianist Laura Gordy; “Sing to the Sun” performed by narrator Ashley Bryan, clarinetist Ted Gurch, oboist Barbara Cook, violist Amy Leventhal, pianist Laura Gordy, percussionist Peggy Benkeser and the Spivey Hall Children's Choir; “Bernsteinlied;” “Search;” “Between Sisters” performed by soprano Maya Hoover, pianist Lisa Leong, percussionist Peggy Benkeser and flutist Jessica Sherwood; “Helga” performed by violinist Helen Kim, violist Amy Leventhal and cellist Karen Freer; “Jasper Drag” performed by violinist Helen Kim, clarinetist Ted Gurch and pianist Laura Gordy; and “Gospel” performed by the Clayton State Collegiate Chorale conducted by Dr. Shaun Amos.

On Feb. 9, hear Singleton's compositions: “Extension of a Dream” performed by percussionists Peggy Benkeser and Michael Cebulski; “Argoru VII” for solo vibraphone performed by vibraphonist Peggy Benkeser; “Between Sisters” performed by the late Clayton State faculty member soprano Dr. Cheryl Boyd-Waddell, flutist Paul Brittan, pianist Laura Gordy and vibraphonist Peggy Benkeser; “Argoru VI” for solo marimba performed by Michael Cebulski; and “Inside-Out” performed by pianists Laura Gordy and Brent Runnels.

Singleton, an Atlanta-based composer, was born in Brooklyn, NY. Educated at New York University and Yale, Singleton left the States to study abroad as a Fulbright Scholar in Rome. After a decade in Europe, Singleton returned to the United States in 1985 to accept the position of composer-in-residence with the Atlanta Symphony. Singleton is considered by many to be one of America's most important living composers. He has written music for the theater, orchestra, solo instruments, and a variety of chamber ensembles.
