New grief share class starting at PTC UMC

Peachtree City United Methodist Church is beginning a new Wednesday evening Grief Share class for those dealing with the loss of a loved one. The class will meet each week from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in room 306 at Peachtree City United Methodist Church.

Lisa Mahaffey and Ed Craven facilitated their first Grief Share class last fall. Mahaffey, whose first husband died at age 31, said helping others manage their grief was a wonderful experience.

“The videos used in this series were awesome,” Mahaffey said. “Participants were able to hear from professionals in grief recovery as well as hear real-life testimony from people like them on each video. Grief is a journey --- it’s very unique and very individual. Grief Share’s program was designed with that in mind, which touches on each type of loss and each emotion and feeling so participants all found something they could identify with.”

Grief Share uses a video seminar series that features some of the nation’s foremost Christian experts on grief and recovery topics. The support group will use a workbook and offer group discussion time.

“The group was like a family,” Mahaffey said. “What is so special is that when you come to a group like this as a participant you realize that you are not alone in what you are thinking and feeling. You feel relief that what is happening to you is a normal part of grief. You hear others who share their journey and it validates all the things that you thought were only going on in your life.”
