A suspect who ran away from a sheriff’s deputy trying to serve an arrest warrant was caught by Fayetteville police officers after a brief manhunt in south Fayetteville early Tuesday evening.

Anthony Armstrong, 38, was being arrested on a warrant for deposit account fraud, said Sgt. Belinda McCastle of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. He was eventually spotted by the sheriff’s department’s helicopter, Hawk 1, as he crossed Jimmie Mayfield Boulevard to South Jeff Davis, McCastle said.

Fayetteville officers were nearby and arrested him near Industrial Way, McCastle noted.

“It was very good teamwork,” McCastle said.

Armstrong was first encountered at a home on Lauren Street, when the deputy noticed him peek through a door, McCastle said. As the deputy knocked on the door, he heard the suspect run away and the foot chase began, she said.

The deputy lost sight of Armstrong near the Williamsburg subdivision, McCastle said.

In addition to the deposit account fraud charge, Armstrong is also charged with obstruction of a police officer, McCastle said.
